A fixed bundle is a set of products the store chooses. A Mix and Match bundle lets the shopper choose, for example "any 3 for 20% off". Both are common, and both work. But over Black Friday weekend 2025, one did better on every measure we checked.

The full comparison

Head-to-head results:
- Median sales per bundle, BFCM weekend: Mix and Match: $166; Fixed bundle: $132
- Average value per order: Mix and Match: $105; Fixed bundle: $80
- Weekend sales vs. a normal week: Mix and Match: 5.8x; Fixed bundle: 4.7x
- Bundles that at least doubled their sales: Mix and Match: 48%; Fixed bundle: 39%
- How common it is: Mix and Match: Less common; Fixed bundle: About 2.5x more bundles
Mix and Match won on sales per bundle, order size and growth. Fixed bundles are still far more common. That gap is an opportunity: many stores are running the type that grew less.
Why Mix and Match did better on Black Friday
- Holiday shoppers buy for several people. Choosing their own items lets them fit the box to each person.
- The minimum sets the order size. "Pick any 3" makes a three-item order the normal choice.
- Fewer "not quite right" sets. A fixed set fails if the shopper does not want one of the items. A gift box never has that problem.

When a fixed bundle is the better choice
Fixed bundles still have a clear place:
- Products that only make sense together, like a candle and its matching diffuser.
- A named hero set you want to feature on your homepage and in emails, like "The Black Friday Set".
- Shoppers who want a quick choice. Some gift buyers do not want to pick. A ready-made set helps them.

Our verdict: run both, on different products
Mix and Match sold more per bundle on Black Friday. But the best plan is not to replace your fixed sets. It is to add a gift box next to them. Stores with more bundles sold much more: the typical store with 4 to 9 bundles selling earned 18x more from bundles than a store with one.
To stop the two from competing, point them at different products. Use the fixed set for a hero combination, and the gift box for a wider range, like a whole candle collection.
How to set up a Mix and Match gift box
- Choose the Mix and Match preset. In MBC Bundles, create a bundle and choose Mix and Match. Use product groups so shoppers can swap items.
- Add a collection. Pick the items shoppers can choose from. Eight to twelve items is enough choice without being too much.
- Set the minimum and discount. Set a minimum of three items and a single percentage discount, like 20%.
- Allow a fourth item. Turn on optional products so shoppers can add one more.
- Schedule it. Set a start date of November 11 and an end date of December 7, and turn on the countdown timer.

Methodology and sources
MBC Bundles data: bundle-attributed orders across MBC Bundles stores, converted to USD at the time of order. BFCM weekend = November 28 to December 1, 2025. Where we compare types of stores or bundles, we exclude the three largest stores so that no single store skews the result, or we use the median. Results vary by catalogue, traffic and offer. Mix and Match includes Mix and Match presets. Fixed bundles include Standard and Custom bundles.
